Killa Vanilla 3 Month Pack - Take Control Of Your Cravings
WHAT IS KILLA VANILLA? Killa Vanilla is an indulgent vanilla scent that reduces sugar cravings.
HOW DO YOU USE KILLA VANILLA? We smell Killa Vanilla on and off over 2 minutes, every time we feel our sugar craving come on. No need to insert into our nostrils, we can waft on the tip of our nose! We need to consistently and persistently use Killa Vanilla over a period of 2 to 3 months, as this is the time it takes to crack our sugar habit, and in turn, form a healthier positive one!
HOW DID KILLA VANILLA COME ABOUT? The project started way back in 2011 and has been in research and development for many many years! But the key date was in 2016 where we were awarded grant funding to explore the impact of scent on body and mind. It was here, working with the product lecturers, researchers and industry specialists we discovered that an indulgent vanilla scent could suppress sugar cravings. We agreed we must pursue this, as there's a global health crisis (not just the UK) in both obesity and diabetes. However, we needed to know this worked. It just so happened that my best friend (also cofounder) and I were competing in the British Indoor Rowing Championships. This is held at the Olympic Village in East London. Unlike other sports, like boxing, where there's various weight categories, Indoor Rowing has a lightweight and heavyweight category only, with the cut-off being 75 kilograms. My best friend and I had the same fitness and strength, but since I was a lot heavier, the physics and velocity mechanics of a rowing machine would work in my favour to pull a faster time. Dominic said, look I can never compete with you. I'm better off competing as a lightweight. However, he weighed 83 kilograms and had a terrible sweet tooth. The first Killa Vanilla was made for Dom to deal with his sweet tooth. Dominic lost 8 kilograms in 16 weeks, made weight, won the competition and became British Lightweight Champion. Dominic turned to me and said, I know this works, it's your turn.
At the time weight was never an issue for me. But I was fed up with succumbing to my sugar cravings. It was really frustrating with a week of great training and mindful eating being undone with these daily sugar binges. Because I was fit, my concerns weren't around my weight, they related to health. After an evening binge, I would feel groggy, suffer with low mood and brain fog. For the first time in my life, my dentist said I had to cut back on my sugary intake as I was developing shallow cavities in my teeth. I thought, if that's what it's doing to my teeth, what's it doing to my insides! Using Killa Vanilla, I broke my sugar habit in 2 to 3 months. That was 5 years ago and I'm now in control of my cravings. Sugar binges are a thing of the past. Now, I can go out with friends, just share a dessert, whereas back then, I'd have two to myself and then buy more sugary treats on the way home. I no longer suffer with sugar cravings nor binges.
HOW DOES KILLA VANILLA WORK? There are two key pillars of science to Killa Vanilla. The first is neuroscience; dealing with the craving in the moment. Then, we must take a step back and view the craving in its context, which is looking at the habit loop. And this is the second element of science: habit change.
HOW DOES KILLA VANILLA WORK? (PART 1a, NEUROSCIENCE) The reason why millions of us are addicted to sugar (and why we have an obesity and T2 diabetes crisis), is not because of physiological hunger, nor the sugar itself, it's our brain's lust and hunt for dopamine. (Killa Vanilla IS NOT AN APPETITE SUPPRESSANT. We believe if you're hungry, you should eat if and where you can, whole foods and foods high in protein content, as this will make you feel fuller. Killa Vanilla is a sugar craving suppressant).
When we taste and consume sugar, together with its anticipation, our brains release dopamine, known as the 'feel-good' chemical. It literally makes us feel good. Therefore, we are actually seeking this reward of the dopamine release that comes with sugar.
Killa Vanilla can give our brains the same dopamine hit (albeit to a lesser extent, we estimate 35-50% less, deliberately so, to enable us to wean ourselves off sugar).
Killa Vanilla provides our brains with the same dopamine hit through a recently discovered gem of neuroscience, discovered only 5 years ago in the States, called the CROSS-MODAL SENSORY COMPENSATION EFFECT. This is where we can use food-based indulgent scent to induce pleasure in our brains in the same way indulgent foods do. The research shows that exposure to food-based indulgent scent over 2 minutes satisfies our cravings for indulgent food and diminishes our desire for indulgent foods.
Killa Vanilla is the NO.1 FOOD-BASED INDULGENT SCENT, as Killa Vanilla MIRRORS the COMMON NOTE FOUND IN MOST SUGARY FOOD AND DRINKS, and so provides the sensory equivalent to sugar for our brains, thus satisfying the craving and allowing us to move on.
HOW DOES KILLA VANILLA WORK? (PART 1b, NEUROSCIENCE - CROSS-MODAL SENSORY COMPENSATION EFFECT) Let me explain the Cross-Modal Sensory Compensation Effect. But first, let's take a step back. For many years and decades, we've known about CROSS-MODAL SENSORY EFFECTS & CROSS-MODAL SENSORY PERCEPTION. This is where one of our senses interacts and influences another of our senses. Let me give you an example. If we drink black coffee out of a white mug compared to a transparent mug, the black coffee will taste richer and more intense compared to the transparent mug. The visual dynamic of the black popping against the white, through our sense of sight interacts and influences our sense of taste. This is an example of Cross-Modal Sensory Effects and how one sense influences another.
However, the researchers 5 years ago discovered the COMPENSATION principle, where we can use one sense to not only interact and influence another sense, but compensate and substitute for another. This compensation principle applies to our sense of smell and sense of taste, as across all of our senses, they are the most especially interconnected and have a very special relationship. Take flavour for instance, when we're eating, flavour is a combination of smell and taste. The research has shown that we can use our sense of smell to compensate for our sense of taste and in turn, induce pleasure in the brain via our sense of smell rather than sense of taste. What this means is that when we smell Killa Vanilla, it gives our brain the same sweet hit it was seeking from sugar, without ingesting the empty calories of sugar, which contain no nutritional value; no vitamins and minerals, no protein, no fibre.
HOW DOES KILLA VANILLA WORK? (PART 2, HABIT CHANGE) With the scent of Killa Vanilla we're satisfying the sugar craving in the moment. However, it's important for us to take a step back and look at the moment in its context. The craving for sugar and the reward of dopamine are part of a HABIT LOOP. The craving and reward are two parts of a four part habit loop. The four key elements to a habit loop are: cues (or synonymously triggers), the craving, the action (or interchangeably routine) and lastly, the reward.
Let's apply this to real life and I will use myself as an example. When I had my daily sugar binges in the evening, my cues and triggers were: rubbish day at work, not feeling great about myself, bored, (not hungry - as remember, Killa Vanilla is not an appetite suppressant!), cold dark evenings, and lastly the visual cue of the express supermarket on my way home from the train station! There's an assembly of triggers here, relating to environment, time and mood. The craving is the motivational drive to do something about these triggers (essentially to alleviate them), striving towards the reward. The next element is the action or routine. This was going into my local express supermarket on the way home and buying the sugary goods and eating them before I got home! And lastly, the final piece of this habit loop is the reward, which is the release of dopamine, with small secretions starting as I was on the train, ten minutes before I reached the store, further increasing as I was tasting and ingesting the sugar. The release of dopamine made me feel good and better about myself! The reward and dopamine reinforces this behaviour. The next thing you know, I was repeating this day after day and it became a habit. Ie, it was happening subconsciously, with no conscious thought as to this habit loop and understanding what was driving it (my triggers).
A classic habit loop for our customers is the cue/triggers of just finishing dinner (they've eaten, so they're full and don't need the sugary foods), migrating to the couch and putting on the tele. The craving then kicks in for something sweet, which is the brain still seeking out a dopamine hit. The action / routine is grabbing the biscuit barrel, or similar! The reward is the feel-good dopamine from the sugar hit!
We technically can't extinguish a bad habit; we can only evolve and improve an existing one, and make it into a positive one! We have to be realistic, we can't wake up one day and say, right I'm not going to be triggered, nor eat the sugar. We have to work with the existing pillars of a habit loop. We keep the triggers/cues the same, and we must have a similar reward. The key is replacing the routine/action with something more positive, where you can experience a reward.
I broke my sugar habit by replacing the routine of going into the store and buying/consuming the sugary goods, with smelling Killa Vanilla on and off over two minutes on my walk home. We smell it specifically for two minutes as the research shows this is the time it takes to stimulate the brain's reward circuitry and satiate the craving. My brain was seeking out the sweet hit from sugar, whereas it could get the same sweet hit and reward of dopamine (albeit to a lesser extent) from the scent of Killa Vanilla. That was where the magic of the scent and the impact of the Cross-Modal Sensory Compensation Effect was so effective, as I could experience my reward and dopamine release from Killa Vanilla rather than the sugary goods. Especially as I wasn't hungry, I could then avoid the empty calories with no nutritional value, and the long-term detrimental effect of sugar.
HOW IS THE HABIT CHANGE REFLECTED IN THE PRODUCT? This is why we have our 3-month pack, with one stick for each month and each month representing a phase in this journey! As this is a totally new behaviour, the first month is called: Commit. We are going to be using Killa Vanilla and therefore need to cement this vision by committing to this new behaviour! The second month is called: Cultivate. Again, as this is a new behaviour, it must be cultivated! And lastly, the third month is called: Control. As we are now seeing glimpses and feeling in control of our sugar cravings!

SO WHAT IS VANILLA AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO SUGAR? Vanilla is a plant, an orchid. Technically it's a spice and it's used as a flavouring for our foods! The vanilla vine can be traced as far back as 70 million years ago! Up to 3,000 years ago it was used for medicinal purposes. Where it becomes more relevant for us is after the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1521, when the Spanish brought vanilla back to Europe. Vanilla was first paired with chocolate in the 1500s, then dessert in the 1600s, then ice cream a century after that, and in the 1850s, it was paired with soft drinks (as vanilla flavoured syrup with carbonated water). Vanilla has been a base flavour component and has played a ubiquitous role in our sugary sweetened food and drinks for literally decades, and still is. Not only this, Killa Vanilla mirrors the exact common note found in most sugary food and drinks, making it the sensory equivalent to sugar.
SO DOPAMINE PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN ALL OF THIS? Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that reinforces behaviours and acts as a motivational drive. Originally, the evolutionary creation of dopamine was in our best interest, and kept us alive! Back in primitive times, tens and hundreds of thousands of years ago, the dopamine-reward mechanism developed to enhance our chances of survival, together with keeping the species going. This manifested in dopamine surges when it came to sex and childcare, and also foods high in sugar content. When we were trying to survive long harsh winters and literally trying to stay alive, our brains would release high quantities of dopamine when we discovered fruits and foods high in sugar content. This provided energy to keep us going, however back then these foods were not only scarce, but were smaller in size. The problem now is that we still have this ancient brain circuitry that responds in the same way to sugar, but sugar is everywhere and in high volumes!
This is coupled with sugary processed foods designed by food technicians to be deliciously addictive, lighting up the reward centres in our brains.
This is all working against us and is manifest in the crises we have around obesity and T2 diabetes. However, the gem of neuroscience with Killa Vanilla is that we can use our sense of smell in the form of food-based indulgent scent, to work to our benefit, giving our brain the sweet hit it's after, without all the obvious downsides!
WHAT ABOUT WILLPOWER? I'd like to reference Anna Lembke, the American psychiatrist and clinical author and her book, Dopamine Nation, where she talks about willpower as a finite resource. Our willpower is a finite resource that becomes eroded throughout the day. As we get ourselves out of bed, get the kids to school, get to work, navigate the complexities of people and tasks, our tank of willpower is being chipped away. By the time the evening comes, our willpower is gone, leaving us vulnerable to sugar cravings and giving in! As exemplified by a lot of our customers, and my former self! Killa Vanilla tops up your willpower!
KEYSTONE HABIT Killa Vanilla is what we call our keystone habit. This is the founding positive habit that leads to habit stacking: the introduction of other positive habits into our lives. Killa Vanilla is the neurobiological tool that will reduce your cravings, but you are doing the work. You are using Killa Vanilla every time your craving strikes and persisting with this over 2-3 months. It is a hugely empowering process where with our packs and weekly emails (via the QR code on the underside of the pack), you become in touch with your mind, body and triggers. Over time, you become increasingly in control of your cravings and through this empowerment and learning of habit change, can use this to build other positive habits. Our customers have gone on to do brilliant things, from incorporating daily movement into their lives, taking up the sport they've always wanted to do, and even journalling, to better handle their emotions and reactions! Killa Vanilla is just the start!
